Royton Town Annual Sportsman's Dinner at St Annes Rugby Club , Thursday October 21st , 7:30pm start .

KEVIN RATCLIFFE
Defender
Everton 1980 - 1991; 461 appearances, 2 goals
Luckily for Everton, Welsh legend Kevin Ratcliffe had a prescient faith in his own ability, although guaranteed first team football as a teenager with Chester City he had no hesitation when offered the chance to prove himself at Goodison Park. He made his debut as a 19-year-old in a nil-nil draw with Manchester United in front of 58,000 in March 1980 but didn't establish himself in the first team for another two seasons.

Once established in the side, Ratcliffe ascended the ranks with the same electrifying pace he displayed on the pitch. He possessed the sort of fast-twitch muscle fibres normally associated with the strikers who spent most of their game-time tucked in his pocket and, such was his easy dominance, Howard Kendall made him club captain in 1983.

Always in a hurry, by the end of the 1984-85 season he had become Everton's most successful ever captain, guiding the side to an FA Cup triumph in 1984 and a league championship and Cup Winners' Cup 'double' the following year.
